In comparison to the small inkwell or decorative inkstand placed on the desk ready to receive a writer’s dipped pen, the master ink bottle was a large container. It was used to hold bulk ink, sometimes in a concentrated form to be diluted before using. These bottles, often with pouring spouts and produced in a variety of sizes, were then used to refill smaller inkwells.
