The excavation of the SS Republic yielded four individual porcelain figurines each representing a different character and theme, including this charming country maiden with the remains of its original red pigment. Likely of French origin, this figurine as well as the others, was probably the product of one of the many 19^th-century factories mass producing porcelain wares for the American market. Only one country maiden figurine was discovered on the site, suggesting it was a passenger’s personal treasure. The original piece is on display in Odyssey’s traveling exhibit and will remain in the company’s permanent artifact collection.
