Bound for Goa, the São José was the almiranta of a fleet that left Lisbon in 1622, transporting a royal treasure for the Portuguese Empire. Also on board was Francisco da Gama, great grandson of famed Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama, who was on his way to reign at his post as Viceroy of India. Attacked by Dutch and British ships, the São José fought valiantly, but met her demise on a reef off the coast of Mozambique.
After almost 400 years, the São José was discovered. The shipwreck yielded a rare treasure, representing an exceptional collection of 4 & 8 Reales cob coins from Old and New world mints with a variety of dates and denominations -- the stunning remains of royal treasure once bound for India. These incredible coins, four bronze cannon and small glass trade beads were archaeologically excavated by Arqueonautas Worldwide and are presented by Odyssey Marine Exploration.
